Lighting Standards in Canada: CSA, cUL and 120V
Every light fixture sold for permanent installation in Canada has to carry a certification mark. Not a manufacturer's claim, not a CE stamp, not an FCC logo — a mark from a certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. It's the single most important thing to check before buying lighting online, and the one almost nobody checks.
CSA — the Canadian Standards Association. The mark most people recognise. A fixture bearing it has been tested against Canadian electrical standards.
cUL and cULus — Underwriters Laboratories, tested to Canadian requirements. The lowercase c is the part that matters: a plain UL mark is US-only and is not sufficient in Canada. cULus means certified for both countries.
cETL and cETLus — Intertek, same principle. Equally valid.
All three are accepted across every Canadian province. What is not accepted: a bare CE mark (European self-declaration), an FCC mark (US radio interference, nothing to do with electrical safety), or a mark from a body not accredited by the Standards Council of Canada.
Two consequences people discover late.
Insurance. If an uncertified fixture is implicated in a fire, an insurer can decline the claim. This is not a theoretical risk — it is the standard exclusion for non-approved electrical equipment.
Home inspection and resale. An inspector who spots uncertified hardwired fixtures will flag them. That becomes a negotiation item at sale, or a condition to remedy.
For plug-in lamps the stakes are lower, but the mark still tells you the fixture was tested rather than assembled to a price.
Canadian residential supply is 120 volts at 60 hertz, on a standard Type B outlet — the same as the United States.
Much of the world runs on 220-240V at 50Hz. A fixture wired for 220V will underperform badly on Canadian supply or, with an LED driver, fail outright. This is the most common problem with lighting bought from overseas marketplaces, and a voltage adapter is not a fix for a hardwired fixture.
Every fixture we sell is built for 120V/60Hz. No adapter, no step-down transformer, no rewiring before installation.
E26 — the standard medium screw base. Most floor lamps, table lamps, pendants and ceiling fixtures.
E12 — candelabra. Chandeliers and small decorative fixtures.
GU10 and G9 — pin bases, common in track and small spot fixtures.
Note that E27 is the European equivalent of E26 and is physically similar but not identical. A fixture specified as E27 may accept an E26 bulb with difficulty or not at all. Check the base on the product page rather than assuming.
This is where Canadian conditions matter more than the certification itself.
Dry-rated — indoor only, no moisture. Most living-space fixtures.
Damp-rated — bathrooms with normal ventilation, covered porches, soffits. Places with humidity but no direct water.
Wet-rated — direct rain and snow. Required for exposed exterior walls, posts, open patios, and anything inside or directly above a shower or tub enclosure.
The failure mode in Canada is not rain, it is freeze-thaw. Water enters at a gasket, freezes, expands, and splits the seal. The following spring, more water enters. A damp-rated fixture in an exposed position typically fails within its first year here.
Reasonable DIY: replacing an existing hardwired fixture on an existing, correctly rated junction box, with the breaker off and the ground properly identified. Plug-in and battery fixtures need no electrical work at all.
Electrician work: a new fixture location, a new circuit, a box not rated for the fixture weight, or anything in a bathroom near a wet zone. In most provinces new circuits require a permit and inspection, and doing the work without one can affect both insurance and resale.
Fixture weight is the detail most often missed. A standard ceiling box carries considerably less than people assume — heavier chandeliers need a fixture-rated or fan-rated box.
Any fixture for permanent installation needs a mark from a body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada — CSA, cUL, cULus, cETL or cETLus. A CE or plain UL mark is not sufficient.

Damp-rated suits covered locations that never take direct precipitation — porch ceilings, soffits, normally ventilated bathrooms. Wet-rated handles direct rain and snow and is required on exposed walls, posts and open patios.
Replacing an existing hardwired fixture on a sound, correctly rated box is reasonable DIY with the breaker off. New locations and new circuits generally require a licensed electrician plus a permit and inspection.
