Solar outdoor lighting is genuinely excellent here from April to October, and genuinely unreliable in January. Nobody selling it tells you the second half. It's worth knowing before you buy, because it determines whether solar is the right tool for the job or the wrong one.
Three things stack up at Canadian latitudes. Short days — under nine hours of daylight in December across most of the country. Low sun angle, which means less energy hitting a flat panel. And snow on the panel, which stops charging completely until someone brushes it off.
Add cold, which reduces lithium capacity, and a solar light that ran eight hours in July may run ninety minutes in January.
The honest rule: solar for seasonal and decorative use, hardwired or low-voltage for anything you need lit year-round. A walkway you use every night in winter should not be on solar.
Separate panel models beat integrated ones here. A fixture with a panel on a short cable lets you put the panel where the sun is — on a south-facing fence or roof edge — and the light where you need it. Integrated units force you to choose.
Angle the panel toward the winter sun, steeper than you'd think, which also helps snow slide off rather than sit.
Replaceable batteries. Solar lights don't usually die from the panel; they die when a sealed battery reaches end of life after two or three years. A model with a swappable cell lasts twice as long.
Keep the panel clean. Dust and pollen in summer, snow and salt film in winter. A wipe twice a season makes a visible difference.
Garden beds and borders. Deck railings. A shed or fence with no circuit anywhere near it. Seasonal patio lighting. Anywhere the fixture is a nice-to-have rather than a safety requirement, and anywhere running cable would cost more than the light is worth.
Solar doesn't exempt a fixture from weather. Look for wet-rated or IP65+ and a sealed housing — freeze-thaw splits cheap gaskets on solar fixtures exactly as it does on wired ones.
