Pendant Lights

Pendant lights are the fixture people get wrong by inches. Too high and they light the ceiling instead of the counter. Too low and everyone ducks. Spaced badly over an island, three pendants look like an accident rather than a decision. Get the numbers right and a pendant is the single most transformative fixture in a kitchen.

The kitchen island numbers

This is the most common pendant application in Canadian homes, and the one with real rules.

Height. The bottom of the pendant sits 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. On a standard 36-inch island with an 8-foot ceiling, that puts the fixture bottom at roughly 66 to 72 inches from the floor — high enough to see across, low enough to actually light the surface.

How many. Two or three for most islands. Odd numbers read better visually, but the real determinant is island length: under 6 feet, two pendants; 6 to 8 feet, three.

Spacing. Centre them 24 to 30 inches apart, and keep at least 6 inches from the fixture edge to the island edge. Divide the island length by the number of pendants and centre each within its section — that spaces them evenly without measuring from the ends.

Diameter. Each pendant should be no more than about one-third the island's width, or they crowd the surface.

Beyond the island

Over a dining table, a single large pendant or a linear fixture, with the bottom 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop. Same as a chandelier — the rule is about the table, not the fixture type.

In an entryway or stairwell, a pendant on a longer stem or cord fills vertical space that nothing else can. Keep 7 feet of clearance from the floor at minimum.

Beside a bed, a pair of small pendants dropped to nightstand height frees the surface entirely — one of the best-looking and least-used moves in bedroom lighting.

Plug-in pendants: the renter's answer

A plug-in or swag pendant hangs from a ceiling hook and runs a cord to an outlet — no junction box, no electrician, no permission from a landlord or condo board. Given how much of urban Canadian housing is rental or strata, this is a genuinely large category rather than a niche one.

The trade-off is a visible cord. Done well — swagged deliberately to a corner, or run along a beam — it reads as intentional. Done carelessly it looks like a lamp taped to the ceiling. Buy a cord long enough to reach the outlet without pulling tight.

Ceiling height, and why it matters more here

A large share of Canadian housing — post-war bungalows, split-levels, condo towers, finished basements — has 8-foot ceilings or less. Under 8 feet, most pendants become a hazard over a walkway and are only workable over an island, a table or a counter where nobody walks. If your ceiling is 8 feet and the position isn't over a surface, a semi-flush mount is the better fixture.

Check the maximum drop on each product page. Most pendants ship with adjustable rod or cord, but the adjustment range has limits in both directions.

Wiring and bulbs

Every pendant is built for 120V at 60Hz standard Canadian residential supply. No adapter, no transformer, no rewiring. Most take standard E26 bulbs — for kitchens and dining rooms, 2700K to 3000K gives warm light; save 4000K for task areas.
