Crystal Lighting

Crystal doesn't transmit light — it splits it. That's the entire difference between a crystal fixture and a glass one. A cut facet bends light at an angle that depends on wavelength, which separates white light into visible spectrum and throws it across a ceiling as moving points of colour. No diffuser can imitate it.

What actually determines the sparkle

The cut, more than the material. A precisely faceted piece with sharp edges splits light cleanly. A moulded piece with soft, rounded edges just glows. Comparing two fixtures at similar prices, look at facet sharpness in the product photos — that's where the money went or didn't.

Refractive index is the technical measure. Higher index means more pronounced bending and more colour separation:

Optical crystal — highest index, strongest prism effect, most expensive.
K9 crystal — the practical middle ground, and what most fixtures in this range use.
Pressed glass — entry level. Attractive, noticeably less sparkle.

The bulb decides half of it

This is the most common and most fixable mistake in the category.

Crystal needs a point source to refract properly. A clear candelabra bulb with a visible filament gives you sharp, defined sparkle. A frosted or opal bulb diffuses the light before it ever reaches the crystal, and the whole effect disappears — the fixture just glows.

Use clear E12 candelabra bulbs at 2700K. Warm and clear. It's a fifteen-dollar decision that determines whether the fixture looks like what you paid for.

Frame finish changes the character

Chrome and polished nickel read cool and formal — the traditional pairing.
Brass and gold warm the crystal considerably and read more contemporary. Under 2700K bulbs on a February evening, a brass-framed crystal fixture is a much softer object than a chrome one.
Matte black with crystal is the modern combination — the contrast makes the crystal read brighter.

Cleaning, properly

Crystal dulls with dust and cooking film, and a dull crystal fixture loses most of its point.

Breaker off, bulbs cool. Wipe each piece with a microfibre cloth lightly dampened in one part isopropyl alcohol to four parts distilled water. Distilled matters — tap water leaves mineral spots as it dries. Don't spray the fixture directly; liquid running into the sockets is how a cleaning becomes a repair.
