A semi-flush mount is the fixture most Canadian homes should have and almost none do. It hangs 4 to 12 inches below the ceiling on a short stem — just enough of a gap for light to escape upward as well as down.
A true flush mount sits tight against the ceiling. All its light goes downward, which leaves a bright disc directly overhead and shadowed corners everywhere else.
