Ceiling Lights

Ceiling lights are the fixtures nobody thinks about until they're living under a bad one. They do the unglamorous work — general light for a whole room, in the one spot where there's already a junction box. Which is exactly why the choice between a flush mount and a semi-flush mount matters more than most people realize.

Flush, semi-flush, or something with a drop

A flush mount sits tight against the ceiling with essentially no gap. It's the right answer under 8-foot ceilings — the standard in most Canadian condos, bungalows and finished basements — and in hallways, closets and anywhere a fixture would otherwise be a head hazard.

A semi-flush mount hangs down 4 to 12 inches on a short stem. That gap is the whole point: light escapes upward as well as down, which softens the room instead of leaving a bright disc on the ceiling and shadows at the edges. On a 9-foot ceiling a semi-flush gives you far better light quality than a flush mount, and it reads as an intentional design object rather than a builder-grade default.

The rough rule: under 8 feet, flush. At 9 feet or more, semi-flush or a pendant. Between the two, measure your actual clearance and decide.

Add the room's length and width in feet, and use that number as the fixture's diameter in inches. A 10 × 12 bedroom lands at about 22 inches. Most people go too small — a fixture that looks generous in a photo often disappears once it's on a real ceiling.
