Glass is the only lighting material that changes what the light is, not just where it goes. Metal blocks it, fabric softens it, wood frames it. Glass transmits it — and the specific glass decides whether you get a sparkle, a glow, or a hard point of glare.
Clear glass shows the bulb. That means the bulb is part of the design — use a clear filament LED and it looks deliberate. Use a frosted bulb and you get a visible white blob suspended in a transparent shape. Clear glass is the least forgiving choice and the best-looking when it's right.
Seeded and bubbled glass has deliberate air bubbles trapped in it. It scatters light into small points and hides the bulb partially. The most forgiving clear-adjacent option, and the reason it turns up in so much farmhouse and transitional lighting.
Opal and frosted glass diffuses completely. The whole shade glows evenly, the source disappears, and there's no glare at any angle. This is the right choice at eye level — beside a mirror, in a hallway, over a table where people face each other.
Smoked and amber glass tints the light warm and cuts output. Handsome, and genuinely useful in a room that gets too bright — but plan on a higher-output bulb.

Handblown glass has slight thickness variation, occasional bubbles, and a pontil mark where it was cut from the rod. Every piece differs. Machine-pressed glass is perfectly uniform with a visible mould seam.
Neither is wrong — but if a fixture is sold as handblown and every unit is identical in the photos, it isn't.
Glass shows dust and fingerprints more than any other material, particularly opal. A microfibre cloth, breaker off, bulb cool.
The other consideration is transit. Glass fixtures are the most fragile category in lighting — inspect on arrival rather than a week later.
